On February 22, 2026 the United States Men’s Hockey Team faced off against Canadians for the gold medal. At the end of the third period both teams were tied at 1-1. The game then entered sudden death and resulted in a ¨golden goal¨ scored by Jack Hughes.
Hockey Hall of Fame
The Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) is located in Toronto, Canada. The museum was established in 1943, the first members were inducted in 1945. Though a permanent location didn’t open until 1961 in Exhibition Place. The current location opened in 1993 situated at Brookfield Place in downtown Toronto. After the Olympic games the HHOF inquired about the puck almost immediately. The puck, since played both overseas and in the Milano Cortina Olympic Games, is considered property of the International Ice Hockey Federation. In turn the IIHF donated it to the HHOF. The puck is currently sitting behind pristine glass, with digital highlights playing overtop.
The Golden Boy: Jack Hughes
Ever since returning to New Jersey from the Olympic games teammates and coaches claim that Hughes has been more assertive and dominant on the ice. Since his return he has scored 6 goals, and had 12 assists totaling 18 points in 11 games. While overseas the forward had 4 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. But the most special point in those 6 games, the Golden Goal. In the final match of the Olympic games, Canada and the USA were tied 1-1 at the end of the third period. When tied at the end of the third period the two teams will go into sudden death overtime. Meaning that the first team to score ends the game. Luckily for the USA Hughes was able to score just 1:41 into overtime. After that game Hughes was stated by many sources to be the ¨Golden Boy.¨
The Golden Puck
When Hughes found out he would not have access to the puck. He was angered telling reporters that he deems it unfair. He was frustrated that him and Megan Keller (who scored the winning goal for the women) could not keep their pucks. But, the reason he wanted access to the Puck was not one of selfish reasons but rather simplifying wanting the puck for his father. He told reporters that his father would have found it cool and is a big fan of his sons and keeping their memorabilia. Although he was frustrated he did admit that he is honored to have the puck in the HHOF.
When a milestone happens for a hockey player they are typically allowed to keep the puck or gear for themselves. Student-Athlete Nicholas Milone stated, ¨Honestly I see both perspectives of not being able to keep the puck. For Hughes it´s like a major milestone, it´s something we all grow up doing. Throwing your puck to your coach and getting it all taped up and written on with what happened that game. As for the HHOF I completely understand where they are coming from it has been 46 years since the U.S. won gold. So it is a puck from super major moment. It is something that you would have in a place that well-known.¨ Woodbridge Township Hockey stat. girl, Viktoriya Yaropud, says ¨I agree with both of them honestly it is a hard decision to make.¨
About the Hockey Hall of Fame
Then the Hockey Hall of Fame will request access to the item, but it is not guaranteed the HHOF will earn the donation. But in this case the tournament was international. Essentially meaning that the puck does not belong to Hughes or The United States Ice Hockey Team but rather to the Olympics; since they were the ones who provided the puck. The Olympic tournament is a joint tournament by the International Ice Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee.
When a milestone goal is scored like the “golden goal” an on-ice official will collect it before an off-ice official, such as the official scorekeeper or timekeeper, wraps tape around the puck to identify it. The puck is given to the IIHF, which then formally and officially donates it to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Hughes has petitioned the HHOF for the puck. The request was formally denied essentially giving the HHOF ownership of the puck.
